Tax season is finally over for most people and that means one of two things. Either you paid money in or you are due a nice refund. If you fall in the refund group, the question is when will that nice check appear in the mail? Before we go much further, it is important to understand something about tax refunds. If you receive a sizeable refund each year, you need to think through your tax payments. A large refund each and every year is a sign that you are making a mistake in paying taxes. Imagine overpaying your car payments by $500 dollars a year and then getting a refund at the end of the year. Think that is smart? Well, it is exactly what you are doing when you overpay your taxes. If this sounds smart, I would like to borrow some money from you. Okay, enough about that. You are due a tax refund and want to know when it is going to show up. Do you have to call the IRS? Nope. Despite its reputation for having technology from the stone age, the IRS has a great website you can use for this purpose. The first step to finding out about your refund is to visit the site for the IRS. You can find it by doing a search for IRS in any search engine. Displayed prominently on the home page you will see a link for finding out about your refund. Click it. At this point, you need to dig out the great American novel…err, tax return you filed. You need your SSN, specific refund amount and filing status information. You have to click the link called wheres my refund at the bottom of the page to get to the form. As you can see, the form is incredibly simple. Just fill in the information, click and wait for an answer. You will be told the refund date, that there was a problem delivering it to you or there is a problem with the return you filed and the refund is delayed. Obviously, an indication there is a problem with your return is not good news. Before you faint or hit the bottle, take a deep breath. The problem can be anything from a IRS computer glitch to a folded page the computer couldn’t read. It is not Armageddon time. Even if you are audited, it is important to know that most audits are correspondence audits. You will get a letter in the mail raising some issue with your return. You can agree to the proposed change by the IRS or contest it. A tax refund is glorious thing in the view of most people. There is nothing wrong with that view so long as you realize the feds are getting a free loan from you each year. Giving politicians free loans seems dubious to me, but to each their own.
