Brand New College Grant Information for the next School Year The President of the United States proposed funding for new college grants called the Academic Competitiveness Grant and National Smart Grant. Over $700 million dollars is reserved especially for these grants. The whole purpose behind the grant money is to help students to pursue a major in the science, mathematics, and technical fields. Both the Academic Competitiveness and National Smart grants have gone into effect for this school year. Each grant has different requirements to become eligible. The items below describe the basic eligibility requirements. Students could be required to meet more prerequisites to receive the National Smart Grant or the Academic Competitiveness Grant. The Academic Competitiveness Grant is given only to first and second year college students. Freshman students are eligible to collect as much as $750 toward their tuition and eligible second year students could be awarded up to $1300. The National Smart Grant is an award given to junior and senior students in college. Seniors and juniors may be eligible to receive up to $4000. Students may be awarded the National Smart Grant if: They're currently enrolled full-time as a junior or senior in a four-year degree. They are eligible for a Pell Grant. They are working towards a major in technology, science, engineering, mathematics, or a essential foreign language.
